Creep

Witch House, Haunted House, Drag ... whatever genre you want to call it, this style of music is stimulating, emotional, almost hypnotic. Music that compliments the winter season. Ambient, goth, dub, electro, pop are all styles that are incorporated into the music in a distinctive manner.

Artists such as the aforementioned 'Balam Acab', the to be mentioned 'oOoOO' and mentioned in this post Creep are taking many elements of these subgenres and creating music with their own poetic license.

Ghostly and distorted music made by living souls. As you can see hear in the track 'Days' which features an interesting collaboration with 'the xx's Romy'.

Mansions On The Moon

If you didn't download the mixtape below do so now.

As great as the mixtape is, there is a stand out track. Listen to 'She Makes Me Feel' your issues begin to dissipate, your surroundings become much more interesting and your spirits are lifted. A similar effect to that of a psychedelic ... not that I'm too clued up on what that is ...  :-) ...  I was snowboarding up on Mount Rose last week and as I ascended on the cable car this track came on and 'heightened', excuse the pun, the experience...

The Sun glares delicate clarity,
dazzling in the sapphire sky,
a cold breeze across rosy cheeks,
warm air fogs, evaporates instantly into thin air,
you catch your breath,
taken,
whilst painting maps of the wilderness with wandering eyes,

blissful solitude,

the eagle soars,
the eagle is you.

"She Makes Me Feel" ... 'She' being the beauty of life and all that nature encapsulates.

A wonderfully crafted uplifting record...

Baths - Cerulean

In the same vein as Flying Lotus and Gold Panda, California's 'Baths' makes off-kilter, beat heavy music with a focus on glitchy maximalism. Comprised of just one dude named Will, whose voice can sometimes get a bit Passion Pit-y, this debut album 'Cerulean' has been one of my go-to's for the past month or so. My favorite songs are the more instrumental ones. Watching videos of him perform live is really what put me over the edge, the man is obviously very talented.

Mansions On The Moon

'Mansions on the Moon' is the latest project from Lane Shaw and Ben Hazlegrove (of Pnuma Trio) along with singer/songwriter, Ted Wendler. The group formed a little over a year ago, developing their signature sound at studios in Atlanta and Virginia Beach and have since collaborated with N*E*R*D, Diplo, DJ Benzi and Chiddy Bang's Xaphoon Jones.'

I have been listening to this mixtape non stop for the last 3 days! 'Some tekkers are gooood, some tekkers are baaaaaaaad ... safe to say the boys have done good you know!'  ... Enjoy this as much as I am, available to download by clicking the arrow pointing down on the media player below.

Gayngs

'Who knows why the heart goes on?' ... Listen to Gayngs and you might figure out why.

A myriad hybrid of artists featuring Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, P.O.S, Mike Noyce members of Megafun, the Rosebuds and Solid Gold with Ryan Olsen leading the consortium. There are over 22 artists in this Gayng with their musical relaytions spanning across the genres...

Upon listening to the album 'Relayted' it's soft rock, 70's nostalgic sub-genre pop roots immediately come to the fore. Influences? Remember '10cc'? The classic heartbreak song... 'I'm Not In Love'? ... The pretenders covered it for the movie 'Indecent Proposal' ... still don't remember? As soon as you hear it you will recognise the record and probably begin humming along. Despite this comparison Gayngs succeed due to their lack of resemblance, where 10cc might sound cheesy, Gayngs are sexy yet sentimental.

Watch out for those almost pornographic Sax solos ...

Relayted currently out on the Jagjaguar record label.

Jono McCleery

Wow!

I lay here with a cold. 'Sniffle sniffle' somewhat dazed as congestion aches the face ... you know the feeling? ... It matters not for I have a panacea oozing out of the speakers.

A strange simile but listening to the London based artist Jono Mccleery is as effective as combining Halls Soothers with Vicks Vapour Rub.

'Tomorrow' is quite simply just a wonderful record. Mccleery's sleepy soulful voice, summery guitar riffs, relaxed drum loops and plucked double bass inserts transcend into the body through the ears, brightening white once rosy eyes, sweeping clear nasal passages, soothing your throat, blissfully warming its way into your heart.

Check him out at http://www.jonomccleery.com/listen.html

Holy Ghost!

Turn Left for 'Cut Copy' or turn right for Chromeo....Mmmmmm Tough! but If I continue will I get anything new? Maybe if I continue I will get the latest ambassadors of James Murphy's DFA label???
Brooklyn Electronic duo Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser who form 'Holy Ghost' drop their debut EP Static On The Wire. Handing over smooth 70s Tropical disco and 80s bright synth-pop. The basslines are showered with step-stone electronica.
Native New Yorkers, looks to kill, signed to DFA and Alex can sing his ass off. These guys got it all right now. As you can guess their Dj sets are full of Disco jewels and being compared to Phoenix and Chromeo no wonder these guys will be liked.

Currently touring around Germany but soon to be on our shores before Cliff Richard releases another Christmas hit...

Phantogram

Mouthful of Diamonds... Earful of gold.

When drinking a fine wine it's easy to gulp it down quickly, do so and miss out on all the subtle flavours, textures that make it delectable. Take Eyelid Movies, the debut album from Phantogram and let it swill... there is much to enjoy.

The sultry vocal of lead singer Sarah Barthel will seduce your auditory lust, sounds of Portishead sputter, drum loops remnant of DJ Shadow break-beat on and the boy-girl duo present parallels to the xx.

As the influences diverge and intersect we hear varying contours of a uniquely put together, essentially trip hop, sound-scape.

Eyelid Movies is the debut album from Phantogram.

Glasser

Have you ever been swooned?

Last night I went to a show not really paying much attention to the other two acts as Florence Welch was in the limelight... though she couldn't make it, not that it mattered much.

Glasser glistened as they performed to a crowd with glazed eyes gently swaying left to right. It was almost enchanting, as if one were swirling around a tribal campfire. The sound is metaphysical, profuse and emotional. Tropical pop, raucous tribal percussion, dreamy soaring vocals and varying fragments of electronica make for an interesting listen.

Ring is the debut album released on True Panther Records.

Mr. Scruff vs Kirsty Almeida

A shout out to Manchester, how I miss you!

Mr. Scruff... One of Ninja Tune's finest, combines forces with fellow Mancunian (a person originating from Manchester, UK) Kirsty Almeida to create 'Pickled Spider', a track which will definitely dust the cobwebs off your speakers.

Mr. Scruff is well known for his eclectic style and quirky visual animations. We 'see hear'... the visual from the video is equally as captivating as the sound. A grumbling dubstep framwork combined with some seismic bass, nominal string inserts and an evocative vocal, one can't help but nod and smile. It's a trip!

Check out more from Mr. Scruff and similar artists on the Solid Steel podcast!

Reeespec!

Tyler Mae

'Yeaaaaaa boiiiiii!!' ... is what immediately comes to my head upon hearing Tyler Mae!

The grey urban gritty streets of the industrious British city, seem to be flowered with colour here and there as Graffiti artists continue to express themselves. Juxtapose this with the notion one should air caution when walking these streets, this is a place to find inspiration... Grime, Drum and Bass, Jungle, Dubstep, Punk, Post Punk, Metal ... 'you get me?'

Tyler Mae fuze all of the above elements in a fantastic head wobblin approach! It's like lickin whipped cream off a raw chicken breast! YUM! They definitely bring some colour to the obscure genres in which their music consists...

They recently played a show with post hardcore boys 'Enter Shikari' and have some interesting projects in the pipeline watch this space!

Socialite is the debut single! Big tings guwaaaanin!

Also band member and amigo mio Dominic Darcy has set up a clothing line - 'Butchered Apparel' /// Facebook Page = Dominic Butchered Darcy

Memory Tapes

What is it you seek? ... If you are reading this then it is most definitely something musical, perhaps something magical?

Dayve Hawk is the creator behind Memory Tapes. If the great Medieval Wizard, 'Merlin' was a composer ... 'into the cauldron of concoction!' Dayve Hawk exclaimed, as he threw down two separate musical projects, Weird Tapes and Memory Cassettes, to produce an album called 'Seek Magic'.

There was a clang, a boom and a bang, electro dance and ambient electronic fusion took place under Philadelphia skies.

A touch of New Order, a splash of The Cure, a dose of Cut Copy and bring it together with The Knife, throw in some psychedelics and abracadabra! The result, inquisitive uniquely fabricated music!

Listen to this album again and again and your appreciation for it will ... snowball!
NB: The instrumental in Bicycle at around 2 mins 43 is bliss!

Lykke Li

From her 2008 debut album ‘Youth Novels’ we heard a Lykke Li' that had a sound that was claustrophobic, calm and vulnerable but yet laying exotic on a cloud.Full of air with a sweet soft sound. Now we welcome a different darker yet raw Lykke Li'... who in this track ‘Get Some’, the lead single from Li’s second album comes out with a battering sound and banging rip-raw drum beat that will floor you unexpectedly.
From the sound of a mouse's heartbeat to aggressive troublesome tones from start to finish. She still has her tense wild cat voice but with the added sound of a shotgun needing an outcome. Glamorous than ever before, this is a damaged lover who has just regained her confidence...

Fang Island

Fang Island has been one of my favorite new bands for the majority of this year. A band that describes their sound as "everyone high-fiveing everyone", their mostly instrumental tunes are devoid of traditional verses and choruses and instead feature three battling lead guitars that weave all over manic drumming. The energy in this music is so deeply rooted it makes me want to shout along with every deconstructed vocal line. The album starts with firecrackers for God sakes! It's the busiest album I've ever heard that doesn't sound the least bit cluttered. Incomparable with most other indie rock coming out these days, I look forward for more from Fang Island.
Here's a poorly mixed video of them playing on KEXP

Jamie XX'

Having gone from the the quiet one in the back to THE QUIET ONE IN THE BACK....The Mercury winners background man has now moved forward on the chessboard getting closer and closer to checkmate with this track...

The 'XX' beat maker and remix master has been given a new instrument to play with in the shape of a steel drum that beats love in to any cold heart.
You could spend $465 dollars on a pair of shorts, but Id rather spend 4:45 seconds listening to this track over and...

Museum Of Bella Artes

Sweden has now established its self as the perfectionists of synth-pop. Another contender for the crown is 'Museum of Bella Artes'....
Like a cat on cocaine this music crackles in to each other beat per beat but still remains tasteful to the ear. In 1964, a Philadelphia trio called the Sapphires hit #25 on the charts with "Who Do You Love". 45 years forward the track is resuscitated with a synth heart and wallowing echoes of sweet laden lyrics that haunt the track with bright colours.
Misty but yet beautiful voices fill the room if this is played loud LOUD.

Chad Valley

Hugo Manuel (Frontman from the Electro outfit 'Ionquil') delivers Chad Valley a psychadelic minamalist lift from Electro that is more calm than wild...
Bathing in shining hot suns and wave after wave of balearic bliss is how Chad Valley talks to us through his music swarming around us with a warm sound that entraps us listening to his effortless mind opening yet tranquil powerful balearic heart...

Eskmo

A native of Connecticut now based in San Francisco he is widely heralded as an artist that offers a new sound wave of electronica. His canvas is big enough to paint a masterpiece that can be heard and currently seen across New York, London & Tokyo.
Eskmo is a member of the Ninja Tunes family who diversifies a flow of sounds that are entwined with heavy bass and an angelic electro beat. With a down to earth rooted vision Eskmo delivers and revives creative electronica allowing it to flourish in to our ears. His debut self entitled album landed on the 4th which travels through RnB, Glitch, Electronica layered with entrancing vocals...

Karkwa - Les chemins de verre

I first heard of this band a few weeks ago after they won the coveted Polaris Prize, the Canadian version of the British Mercury Prize. I know very little about the band other than they're from Montreal and sing every song in French. Their sound strikes me as a combination of Local Natives and Grizzly Bear. Whatever it is it's kept me hooked. Check out this video of them playing the first song off of the album, Le Pyromane. I like how the drummer plays the end on wine bottles.

Warpaint

View All Photos | WARPAINT

The past couple of weeks I personally had no new music to be electrified about but this has now changed thanks to Warpaints new album'Fool' dropping in on the 25th of Oct.
Warpaint's previous LP 'Exquisite Corpse' was just a bite as to what is just around the corner.
Having worked with the likes of John Frusciante (RHCP) & mixes from the talents of Bjork and Primal Scream these girls really do hit notes that will make their songs persevere in your mind with a sound that is both psychedelic and mellow. Comparable to the mellifluous sound of 'Beach House' & channeling sound of the 'Dum Dum Girls' their soft harmonies and calm-to-heart sounds are too recherché to walk past....

Caribou

Having released the 2010 album 'Swim' this has to be one of the best albums I've heard all year. Opening new doors to psychedelic music Caribou take you on a journey of a mixture of beats and sounds surrounded by harmonic voices that will leave a stamp on any music lover due to the sheer quality being fed to your ears..
A Canadian from small-town Ontario now based in England delivers Dance and Electronica that absorb the listener in wanting more. His 2007 album 'Andorra' was obviously just an introduction as we have now been given an entirely different electro-tinged sound to listen too....

Mount Kimbie

With the release of their debut album 'Crooks & Lovers' Mount Kimbie has closed the doors of dubstep and hardbeat by fusing together loops of fragile electronica, hard hitting sounds and angelic voices over rythmic co-ordination. Having already released 2 EP'S 'Maybes' & 'Sketch on Glass', it was time to come away from dubstep and be pioneers of their own brand which they have grabbed with 2 hands and never let go.
With similarites to Burial, Ratatat & James Blake. These boys have definatly made a name to be remembered....

Ceo

Ceo is a solo project from Sweden's Eric Burgland, more reconisable as the Yin ,so to speak, in the band 'The Tough Alliance' the Yang being his childhood friend Henning Furst.

What you have with Ceo is a Yin and Yang, an interconnection of contrary resonances that give rise to each other in turn, of pop synth, rich orchestrals and charming Brit-pop inspired vocals carrying simplistic lyrics.

Check out 'The Tough Alliance' and the new album from Ceo 'White Magic'

Blind Pilot

Portland (Oregon) is a city fuelled with music. You can go on a dizzying ride of sounds and one that sticks out is 'Blind Pilot'. The band can only be seen live on the West at the moment working their way down PCH.

Captained by the voice of Israel Nebeker we hear a gentle soft acoustic voice that meets Indie and Folk on the same day. This is music that is layered on top of seductive songs and soaring harmonies that smile melancholy. As chilled as Bon Iver (but not as diverse) and as Melodic as the Local Natives (but a sound that is more relaxed).
Enough said...

James Blake

London London London... forever inspiring creative minds and be there so many the creative competition in the English Capital is fierce! If you are going to make something here using your mind power ... well it better be fcuking great, or it is nothing at all.

It is what defines the London music scene from all others. Pioneer central. The variation of influences, new and old, is something of a force that molds modern musicians living there! It has to have edge, it has to have something about it that rocks the Osscicles in the listeners ear.

Take James Blake for example...  look out for his new EP Klavierwerke, Oct 10th.

Balam Acab

A montage of images, a montage of sound ... an eclectic mix of varying ambient elements within the production of Balam Acab's music emerge, like an object that plunges into deep water, creating reverberating tidal waves. Shimmering melodies and dreamy atmospherics surf into the distance as the listener floats on.

'NO WITCHES IN THIS HOUSE!' reads the statement from 19 year old Alec Koone, referring to the association of his music with the Witch House Genre. To some extent his music has some common elements that resonate from the genre but there is a lot that set him apart. Alec does not play or sing instruments he creates a mood board of samples from the internet distorting, tweaking and enhancing vocal loops, noises and beats creating his own form of musical expression.

See Birds EP is available now.

Deerhunter - Helicopter

Hey there. You should probably check out the new Deerhunter single "Helicopter" off their new album "Halcyon Digest"; both are highly recommended. Check check it:

Paul & The Patients

Its about time an EP was released because being given only once slice of cake is just a tease when you are craving for more. 'To The Lions' is about to be released on the 28th of Oct and it will generate a recognition that is long overdue. The songs are austere, simple good sound that is unmistakably heroin added with the addictive unfurled voice that is so easy to accept.
Currently sticking to home turf in the NYC they will be on the road with their 1st stop being the ever trendy Williamsburg (Bruar Falls). If your in the area I recommend that you stop by to hear their progressive shoe gaze indie sound.....

Tuesday 21 September 2010

Chief

If you like the Arctic Monkeys and folk rock then welcome to 'Chief'. Consisting of 4 gun slingers from Santa Monica, CA who's debut album 'Modern Rituals' is out now...
Currently touring around the US but will be hitting Europe in Oct/Nov with Germany & Sweden to start their European leg..
The band are contagious bringing their Soaring melodies, shifting guitars, lovelorn lyrics and heart stopping harmonies to the table. Modern Rituals is a great example of cohesive and effortlessly good music. A mix of mature sounds old and new tied down to their sound. This has to be one of 2010's greatest introductions to modern day folk.....

Maps & Atlases - The Charm

Folk? Math rock? Marching band drum patterns? Whatever it is it's catchy as hell. The second track off the Illinois quartet's debut album "Patch Perchwork" is nearly entirely made of clattering, militaristic drums and looped guitar and synth samples, all supporting the driving vocal performance of singer Dave Davison repeating "I don't think there is a sound that I hate more than the sound of your voice". The track builds layers upon layers, coming to a thundering halt just before all fall apart. The rest of the album is much more pop oriented, but equally well-crafted. Definitely a high recommendation.
Here's a youtube link, though the quality isn't great:

Dr Dog

Psychedelic Rock, Indie Rock, Baroque pop I dont care what genre..... just I'm always amazed at how good some peoples voices are and how the words sound effortless when sung.
Dr. Dog consists of 4 Philadelphians that are revitalising a sound that is no longer everyday day-to-day. The harmonies are shared from the voices of Toby Leaman (Bass) & Scott McMicken (Lead) with a heavy influence of 1960's pop-rock with the embrace of a Lo-Fi indie hug....
'Where did all the shadow people go' & 'The streets are filled with sharks'. Political rock in my mind has never been better....

Artist Review
Bonobo
arctic, biting, bleak, brisk, cool glacial, ,wintry... Chill ... is what i'm looking for...
For those of you who are not used to Bonobo or his unique and custom sound I would like to introduce you to a DJ that I would have to consider in my top 10 music best loved sounds. Bonobo, the stage name of 'Simon Green' (born 30 March 1976), is a musician, producer and DJ that gives every song a unique blend of sounds that come together to form albums that flabbergast. The music is composed with a wide variety of ambient samples juxtaposed with heavy, often complex basslines. His music generally develops linearly - with new elements such as basslines or percussion coming in one after the other.
6 albums deep Bonobo released his new album Black Sands this year on the Ninja tunes label. This album shows a gun-slinger at the top of his game. A man who can drop a violin to a sax which evokes a musical aura of emotion when you let your ears feed. His heroin sound delivers an 'instrumental' approach that can not be easily overlooked with skittering beats, piano rhythms and butter smooth tones that will make no room feel alone... I've always relied on artists to deliver album after album which maintains the same sound but can deliver it to us in a different fashion time and time again. And that my dears is Bonobo....
Taken from the new album Black Sands......
Taken from the album one off's, remix's and Bsides....
Its jazz, Its hip hop, Its funk, Its soul

Relish

The French Semester

Charming and Catchy The French Semester already shlepp 2 albums, but the 3rd??? Their smile sound is escorted by the voices of melodic charm and fun by 5 friends from the west that combine alternative country and synth pop to form a sound that is just pure ear charming.
This song has a 60's feel that brings to mind pop psych from an era that will never be forgotten. Breezy and raw these boys are definatly in the class of one of LA's musical assets.
If your sound is Stornoway/Radio Silverlake then stop, look, & listen....

Sunday 5 September 2010

Skream

Multi-talented, Multi- instrumentalist that is Skream who is well known through out the world of 'Dub-Step' brings us his second full length album in 4 years.
....Taken from his new album 'Outside The Box' Skream delivers an appetizer in the form of his first single Listening' to the records on my wall. The sound we hear is dance being introduced to dub-step with different sounds amalgamated. The song elevates constantly as if you were on an elevator waiting for rapture...

Experimental song, Experimental video. A trend setter to the highest degree, Skream is back.

Wolf Gang

It feels as if 'MGMT' have been babysitting......now ready to burst on the scene is Wolfgang. The stage name given for 'Max McElligot'.
Currently touring around Oztralia and feeding them the superlative sound of alternative indie rock. This love song is amalgamated with an amplitude of sound being followed by a heartbeat of a hook in the form of the electric guit. More melancholic than the 'XX' and hawkish than 'MGMT', sit on your balcony, put your feet up and adore. x

Wild Nothing

Pack your picnic and head to Dolores Park on a warm sunshiney San Francisco day... watch the world go by... hipsters smoke in groups, the leather clad gays walk their dogs, countless free spirits frolic on the grass as they fly kites, slip n slide, play the guitar, as they sketch, write, play wiffle ball ... do whatever it is they want to do... palm trees all around and the city skyline behind on a backdrop of blue sky.

Let the suns hazy rays tickle your skin and as you heat up let the sound of Wild Nothing refresh you, drenching you with a summer cocktail of shoegaze, 80-s dream pop and mope rock...

Gemini is the debut album.

Dead Mans Bones

Dead Man's Bones

The 2 great minds of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields come as 1 to create Dead Man's Bones that derives from their obsession with the 'haunted mansion'ride at Disneyland. This gives the songs a creepy feel as we can see from the video in PA PA POWER.

The music is infested with silent melo-dramas, old hall vaudleville horror music (which I would class as 'gospel horror').... and of course not forgetting being touched by the sweet sound of LA's Silverlake Childrens Choir. Goslings vocals are impressive yet very authentic unlike anything you've heard, and there's a smattering of weird instruments you'd never expect. Its as if Dan Wilson (Semisonic) & James Mercer (Broken Bells, Shins) are strumming his vocal strings whilst hearing the haunting innocence of the children. .

Beautiful yet spooky and upbeat....

HTDW

How To Dress Well create compelling thought provoking music. The experimental manner in which Tom Krell composes his music is interesting, it's captivating. It somewhat transcends your listening experience and takes you on an auditory adventure.

If Roald Amundsen had an iPod in his inventory, during his heroic exploratory voyage across the cold desolate landscape of the Antarctic, How To Dress Well is the soundtrack that would linger in his soul.

Love Remains is the debut album due out September

Which Coast?

East, West how about Best Coast?

Well they are a charming reminder of 60's Californian 'surf pop', you remember The Beach Boys? The Everly Brothers?

Lead singer Bethany Cosentino, the girl with the kaleidoscope eyes, has a lot to do with why Best Coast sound so enjoyable, she has a sweet sunshine orange juice tone and hits notes with wonderful clarity. Combine this with bubblegum melodies and vivid choruses it's easy to imagine yourself cruising along the Pacific Coast Highway...

Great band!

For-mi-daaaable

The Joy Formidable, the latter word of the bands name could be pronounced in a french accent as their sound as formidable as it is, is quite magnifique a synonym of the adjective in question.

Their music is soaring and emotive with Gothic layers and doses of post-punk, Joy Division meets Arcade Fire who then bump into the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the outcome is a 3 piece indie brit pop outfit named the Joy Formidable.
